UPDATE: February 1, 2012
We have completed our retransmission negotiations with local broadcasters. Retransmission agreements have been reached with Green Bay stations WBAY (ABC) and WGBA (NBC) which will continue to be re-broadcast on our system. Unfortunately, we did not reach an agreement with Green Bay stations WFRV (CBS), and WACY (myTV) and they will no longer be in the 2012 channel list. Federal FCC rules require us to negotiate a fee for the rights to re-broadcast local station programming. Our intent was to be able to continue to carry all Wausau and Green Bay stations but to keep the cost of programming contained and reasonable, it no longer is economically feasible for us to carry some duplicate network stations.

UPDATE: December 21, 2011
We have completed our retransmission negotiations with the following broadcasters: WBAY (ABC) - Green Bay, WFRV (CBS) - Green Bay, WGBA (NBC) - Green Bay, WACY (myTV) - Appleton. We have reached an agreement with WBAY (ABC) and will continue to re-broadcast this station on our system. We did not reach an agreement with WFRV (CBS), WGBA (NBC), and WACY (myTV) and will no longer be carrying those stations after January 1, 2012. We would like to be able to carry these stations but it no longer is economically feasible for us to do so.

We are currently in retransmission negotiations with the following broadcasters; WBAY (ABC) – Green Bay,WFRV (CBS) – Green Bay, WGBA (NBC) – Green Bay, WACY (myTV) – Appleton. Federal rules require us to negotiate a fee for the rights to re-broadcast these stations. In order to keep the cost of programming contained, it is possible that we may not be able to carry one or all of the above mentioned stations as of January 1, 2012.
Broadcasters charge us for their "over-the-air" local and national network signals. Federal rules give broadcasters a monopoly in their markets, allowing them to demand exorbitant fees to carry their local channel. Your bill has a monthly "Local Channel Broadcast Fee" which will be increasing in 2012 because the FCC rules require that "Retransmission Consent" fees must be paid. This rule gives broadcasters a price-fixing rather than a free-market competition opportunity to compete with other out of area stations. If you disagree with this practice, please write the FCC today and let them know that competition, not rules will lower fees.

Amherst Telephone Company is proud to announce a long-term project to upgrade our network with state-of-the-art fiber optic communications infrastructure. Last year during our summer construction season we started to put fiber optic cable in the ground designed to bring Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH). With the increasing demand for High Definition TV and higher Internet speeds, fiber optics has the capability to provide the bandwidth demands of today and into the future.

Our existing network is based upon a copper wire infrastructure. Copper cable has served us well for many years but with today's demand for more services on a single wire facility, copper limits the distance and services available on our network. Fiber optics are less distance sensitive and deliver greater bandwidth with greater reliability. What does this mean to you our customer? Learn More...
